Uncommon Collective is a nonprofit organization founded by eight educators who recognized a significant gap in support for young adults with disabilities after graduation. Through their shared experiences, they saw firsthand that many of their students lacked access to meaningful community involvement and social opportunities once they left school. What began as a conversation among colleagues about this unmet need quickly evolved into action. Conversations with families only reinforced their concerns, highlighting the need for inclusive spaces and programs.
One of the founders, Emily Knapp, shared the story behind how the organization came to be in a recent interview. Emily studied at Randolph College and the University of Maryland, where she earned her degree in English along with teaching certifications. She spent five years teaching general education, before transitioning to special education at North Star for 8 years. Where she noticed a trend within her students, after graduation there were limited programs, clubs, or organizations that they could access or want to attend. During this time, she observed a consistent pattern; students who graduated often had limited opportunities for continued social engagement or structured activities. Emily recalls frequent conversations with fellow educators who wished they could continue supporting their students beyond the classroom. That shared passion ultimately brought the founders together, motivating them to act and create lasting change.
Determined to make a difference, the group worked quickly to establish Uncommon Collective as an official nonprofit. At its core, the organization challenges the notion that individuals with disabilities “age out” of services or opportunities. Instead, it seeks to provide ongoing support, empowerment, and inclusion. In doing so, it also offers peace of mind to families and caregivers, knowing their loved ones are part of a safe, uplifting community.
Uncommon Collective’s mission is to create an elevated social club for adults with disabilities that foster confidence, celebrate individuality, and encourage meaningful connections. With backgrounds in special education, the founders are highly intentional in designing events that are not only accessible but genuinely enjoyable. Their goal is to ensure that participants feel respected, valued, and empowered, while developing social skills in a supportive environment. Every step taken reflects attentiveness to their community and is made to tailor to the adults’ interests, needs, and wants.
On June 20th, 2026, Uncommon Collective held their first official event, a Paint and Sip night. The evening was filled with creativity, joy, and connection as participants followed guided painting instructions while enjoying mocktails. The event marked a successful beginning and set the tone for future programming.
Looking ahead, Uncommon Collective plans to expand with additional events that encourage self-expression and skill-building. The organization also hopes to one day open a dedicated facility that would include event spaces, classrooms, and a shop where individuals can gain valuable work experience and develop practical skills.
