In a world where inclusion and acceptance are paramount, the Special Olympics stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Recently, I had the chance to chat with Tim Girard, Vice President of RKT, who has passionately dedicated his time and expertise to coaching Special Olympics teams. I was curious to learn more about what drives his commitment to this inspiring cause so enjoy his eloquent and heartfelt answers.
“What motivated you to get involved with the Special Olympics?”
I think part of the motivation for getting involved with the Special Olympics comes from raising twins that have some special needs. In addition, my motivation comes from a desire to support and celebrate the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. I also thought it was important to get all 3 of my kids involved to teach them the values of empathy, inclusion, and perseverance. It’s such an incredible opportunity for kids to witness athletes of all abilities striving for their best and having fun while doing it. Being part of that can inspire a sense of unity and remind us all that everyone, regardless of challenges, has something valuable to contribute.
“What benefits do you see for the athletes who participate?”
The benefits for the participating athletes are amazing. The Special Olympics provides a platform where athletes are celebrated for their skills, not defined by their disabilities and challenges. There is also a sense of accomplishment and self-worth that has a huge impact on their confidence and the athletes develop a strong sense of pride in their abilities and feel empowered to set goals and achieve them. Another benefit is the sense of community and camaraderie. The Special Olympics does an amazing job of fostering an environment where athletes form lifelong friendships.
“Can you describe your responsibilities as a coach?”

“Do you feel there is a strong community surrounding the Special Olympics?”
100%! There’s a really strong and supportive community surrounding the Special Olympics, and that’s one of the most inspiring aspects of it. It’s a very special environment where people are encouraged to lift each other up and celebrate each other’s successes, no matter how big or small. In addition, the families are amazing and play such a large role. It’s so awesome and rewarding to see the families cheer on their athletes, share stories, and support each other through all the high and lows.
“How would you encourage others to get involved?”
When I encourage others to get involved with the Special Olympics, I will always start by letting them know how transformative the experience can be—for both the athletes and the volunteers. There is simply the joy of making a difference in someone’s life. In addition, being part of such a special community can really shift your perspective on life and remind you of what’s truly important—supporting others and celebrating everyone’s unique abilities.
If someone wants to get involved, I would recommend starting. small – maybe by volunteering at a local event or supporting a team
